Moon Orchestra
With a strong basis in various obscure European and Cuban easy-listening
records, Jon Platou Selvig, aka Moon Orchestra's sole member, blends in
a contemporary edge with carefully crafted beats and serene melodies.
His inspirational sources range from Barry White and Cuban salsa to contemporaries
such as Jazzanova, DJ Food and St. Germain. A strong representative of
the blossoming Norwegian scene, Moon Orchestra sets out to fill the void
left between floor-filling club anthems and sweet-but-dull chill-out.
Carving his own little niche, Jon is here to give you something for your
hips as well as your head.
Jon is no stranger to neverending studio sessions. As a key member of bands Salvatore and Perculator he has proved to be invaluable in defining the two diverse group's sound. Now he is here with a sound of his own, one where distinct Scandinavian aesthetics meet the rhytmic and melodic flavours of say Cuba, downtown New York, Berlin, Chicago and Paris. Jon has done his homework and knows his classic jazz, funk, latin and hip-hop. Couple this with a strong understanding of Chicago's post-rock scene (courtesy of Salvatores sessions with Tortoise's John McIntyre) and you have a truly unique sound. It's tempting to start a massive namedropping session, as this vibrant release could be compared to the best that's being released. We'll cut the list short and claim that Moon Orchestra moves in the same directions as such diverse artists as DJ Shadow, Jazzanova and Tortoise. It sure sounds pretentious, but in this case we feel we have the right to boast. With ease and style, Moon Orchestra manages to move through a set of tunes that vary greatly in tempo and genre. "You'll know when you get there" showcases styles such diverse as glitchy electronica, hip-moving latin-house, hypnotic post-rock and cut n' paste broken beats. The tempos range from understated downtempo to outbursts of 120 bpm club-jazz stuff. It's all carefully selected, edited and mixed resulting in a esthetic and distinctly Scandinavian affair. Experience the best to come out of Scandinavia since, well Röyksopp maybe? Anyway, Norwegian electronica doesn't get any better than this. Buy it and be treated to a unique Scandinavian affair: "You'll know when you get there!" Catalogue number: NDBUT 027 |
